Sport BTEC Options Information

What is the main aim of the course?

The aim of the Sport BTEC course is to develop knowledge in the areas of sport, fitness, fitness training and the human body through a vocational course. Students will also develop their understanding of sport techniques, tactics leadership and conventions throughout the course.

What will you learn?

Students will study three components though the Sports BTEC course;

Component 1: Preparing Participants to take Part in Sport and Physical Activity - in this unit students will learn how to participate in different sports and also look at their provision – as well as possible barriers that individuals may face when participating in sport. Students will look at the equipment and technology involved in sport, and how this has evolved. Students will also learn how to prepare their bodies for practical participation.

Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participant's Sports Performance - here students will look at fitness training and methods we can use to improve fitness. This will look at the principles that we use to ensure training is effective, and how we can monitor the intensity that we are working at. The majority of this unit is practical and students are assessed on their practical ability.

Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity - leadership is a key element within sport, and this unit will develop understanding of what a good leader is and how to lead small groups of other students. Students will learn how to lead small groups of other students in a sporting activity, as well as developing their knowledge of fitness and fitness testing.

How is the course assessed?

Students will study three Components. One is an externally assessed exam and two are coursework based.

Component 1: Preparing Participants to take Part in Sport and Physical Activity – internally assessed, essay based assessment.

Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participant's Sports Performance - internally assessed, essay based assessment.

Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity - externally assessed exam.

How does this course connect to the world of work and allow students to reach ambitious destinations?

This course gives students a base knowledge in the sports industry, and how the body and mind of a sportsperson works. From here students can use this knowledge and, alongside further study at W6 Sixth Form at SRWA as well as university, can explore careers in such industries as;

  • Sports Coach
  • Physiotherapy
  • Working within sports clubs as a sports scientist or sports psychologist
  • Personal Trainer
  • Nutritionist

These are just some of the careers available in one of the biggest industries in the World.
