History GCSE Options Information

What is the main aim of the course?

Our aim is for students to develop their knowledge and understanding of key events in British and world history, to ask relevant questions about the past, to use sources in their historical context, to consider the significance of people and events; and to evaluate how and why different interpretations exist.

What will you learn?

There are five topics in the Edexcel GCSE History course which are studied in Years 10 and 11:

Medicine in Britain, c.1250-present day (20% of the final grade)

The British sector of the Western Front, 1914–18: injuries, treatment and the trenches (10% of the final grade)

Early Elizabethan England, 1558–88 (20% of the final grade)

Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941–91 (20% of the final grade)

Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918–39 (30% of the final grade)

How is the course assessed?

The History course is assessed through three written examinations at the end of Year 11, which are worth 100% of the final GCSE grade. There is no coursework. The three written examinations cover the five topics outlined above.

How does this course connect to the world of work and allow students to reach ambitious destinations?

A great history education enables young people to become successful life long learners, who armed with powerful knowledge and are critical thinkers, are able to view the world on a deeper level.

Historians discuss, debate, analyse and examine evidence in order to reach conclusions; skills which are recognized and valued by employers in fulfilling and prestigious workplaces.

Many GCSE students go on to study History at A Level at W6 Sixth Form at SRWA and at degree level. One of our former students is now studying History at Oxford University. Moreover, history opens doors to a variety of different careers including; law, teaching, marketing and research roles.
