Statistics at SRWA

During a Statistics lesson we will usually cover one key concept per lesson, sometimes this one concept will take more than one lesson to push the students to truly understand both the content and the relevance to the wider world. Correct mathematical language and notation is insisted upon so that communication between students is of the highest level. Mini-whiteboards and questioning by the teacher are a common part of the lesson to help with students gaining a deeper understanding.

We encourage professional discussion and debate, particularly when thinking about the impact of statistics in the wider world. All of these principles are in place to facilitate students to be able to see links, connections and make inferences and conjectures about different areas of Statistics as well as being able to articulate this clearly to others.

We are able to spend a long time on individual topics to help gain deeper understanding, making connections, keeping the class working together on the same topic and a fundamental belief that, through effort, all pupils are capable of understanding, doing and improving. But we also recognise that just spending a good chunk of time on a topic doesn’t mean that all pupils will ‘master’ it the first time they see it, and that they need to see it again and again in different contexts to help them truly develop their understanding on their journey within statistics, so we’ve built in the revisiting and reinforcing features seen in Maths lessons.

Each fortnight will include a focus on a career that uses statistics as a foundation skill. We will show what the job entails and how both GCSE Statistics, and further Statistical education, will help to be successful in that particular job.
