English at SRWA

The English curriculum at The Sir Robert Woodard Academy has been designed to build upon the foundations of the KS2 National Curriculum both in terms of knowledge and skills. It is unapologetically challenging.

Our guiding principle is to provide opportunities for increased breadth and depth in reading, writing and speaking. We believe that students should be expected to read whole books, to read in depth and to read for pleasure and information. Through reading in particular, we believe that students have a chance to develop intellectually, emotionally, culturally and socially. Our writing curriculum balances creative expression with explicit academic writing skills. Careful adaptations in our curriculum implementation ensure all learners are included and supported to achieve.

Developing Our Learners

  • We want them to appreciate that they can be and should be part of the discourse.
  • We want our students to become critical readers and keen writers.
  • We want them to be word rich and understand the power of language.
  • We want them to know concepts and stories that have shaped the world.

Structure And Sequence

Our curriculum is sequenced around the cumulative building of skills and knowledge. Across each Key Stage, students will study a range of text types in depth each half-term (Poetry, Prose, Drama) as well as being taught to write for different purposes and audiences. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that each text type and skill is revisited and built upon with a greater level of challenge.

Destinations And The World Of Work

We understand the relationship between learning and fulfilment in life. Our curriculum ensures that all students are empowered with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Students in English learn critical thinking skills; how to use a library; information skills; how to present to a real life audience; how to write formally using standard English and how to engage with a diverse range of ideas. Throughout the curriculum, we signpost future pathways and expose students to experts in the field.

Our extra-curricular provision includes a Creative Writing club, Debate Society, Newspaper club and Literature Masterclasses, as well as the opportunity for theatre trips, poetry performances, author visits and an excursion to the British Library.
