Science at SRWA

Science at SRWA adopts the following principles which aim to ensure that every child experiences high quality and inclusive teaching and learning.

Every lesson has clear, contextualised learning goals with high expectations. Objectives are shared at the start and revisited throughout.
Literacy and oracy are promoted to develop the whole child.

Reasoning and clear explanations are encouraged and misconceptions challenged in an open and safe learning environment.
Mathematical skills are utilised to solve scientific problems.

Lessons align with the National Curriculum, adjusted for course, tier and ability including stretch and challenge for all students.
Teaching is adapted to the strengths and needs of all pupils, with intentional monitoring, participation and assessment for learning techniques effectively utilised.

Developing Our Learners

Our guiding principle is to develop the science capital of our students, facilitating them on their journey to become future scientists or citizens of science, possessing the ability to recognise and use the power of rational explanation to understand and scientifically question the world around them. We also want our students to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena and use a depth and breadth of new knowledge and understanding to explain these phenomena, predict how things will behave and critically analyse outcomes.

Structure And Sequence

At KS3 we have developed a novel approach to teaching and learning in science, Wicked Problem Based Learning (WPBL). The WPBL framework is rooted in real-world contexts and leverages "wicked questions" to contextualise learning. By integrating the required National Curriculum content with meaningful project, inquiry and aims-based learning, the WPBL framework aims to foster student agency and empower learners, utilising powerful knowledge to help them understand and confront humanity's most pressing challenges. We also ensure that students have the foundational knowledge required to prepare students for WPBL by completing units in the Fundamentals of Science.

At KS4 and KS5 the science curriculum has been constructed in a way that integrates a subject specialist and mastery approach, building upon the foundational scientific knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills developed during previous key stages.

 

Destinations And The World Of Work

The pathway to future scientists and citizens of science is clearly signposted and ranges from the academic offering we have at KS5 and high quality enrichment opportunities, to the use of contextualised learning outcomes in lessons. The development of science capital among our learners is enhanced by access to high quality independent research projects, which provide links to leading universities and opportunities to present their findings to scientists from around the world. Students at KS3 also have the opportunity to attend a science club which is designed to develop that sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around them.
