Religious Education (KS4) at SRWA

Year 10 and 11 are currently studying OCR GCSE Religious Studies, in which they learn the beliefs, teachings and practices of Christianity and Islam, and consider philosophical and ethical questions from a Christian perspective.

During the course, students will foster a deep understanding of different world views through discovery of the historical roots of Christianity and Islam, the customs and traditions and the impact faith has on the life of a Christian and a Muslim. Through greater understanding, comes greater compassion, flexibility of mind and clarification of students’ own thoughts and beliefs.

Developing Our Learners

The course encourages learners to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to engage in debate and discussion about life in a modern pluralistic society, with religious and non-religious world views. Learners will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Christianity and Islam, and the importance of their beliefs, teachings and practices
  • analyse, evaluate and discuss the issues raised by Christianity and Islam, and their importance for individuals, communities and societies
  • refer to relevant sources of wisdom and authority, including scripture and/or sacred texts - consider significant common and divergent views within Christianity and Islam
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of different philosophical and ethical arguments relating to Christianity
  • demonstrate the depth of their understanding of Christianity by referring to teachings, beliefs, views, attitudes and values, supported by reference to relevant sources of wisdom and authority, and consider significant common and divergent views within Christianity
  • refer, where appropriate, to different philosophical, ethical or religious perspectives in support of explanations or arguments
  • consider the issues raised for Christianity in Great Britain today, recognising diverse views and including other religious and non-religious beliefs.

Structure And Sequence

Leading into KS4, learners study Christian beliefs and practices in Year 9, as it sets the historical context for both religions, and is the religion our cohort are most likely to be familiar with. Islam is then taught in Year 10, enabling the discrete study of the two religions, building on the Christian tradition without confusing the two, and enabling discussion and debate of the similarities and differences.

Knowledge acquisition will be through repetition, recall and application, through quick-fire verbal quizzes, knowledge tests and practice questions.

In Year 11, students tackle the ‘Religion, Philosophy and Ethics in the modern world’ module enabling them to revisit and consolidate their knowledge of Christianity, while considering their views on topical moral issues alongside those from Christian and non-religious perspectives.

Destinations And The World Of Work

The ability to understand and explore different world views is incredibly important in today’s society, both culturally and economically, as we continue to operate on an increasingly globalised scale. Academically, it is a strong base for discussion, debate and analytical subjects such as Philosophy, Politics and of course Theology.
