'Just Reading' for years 7-9

Posted on: 1st Oct 2021

Year 8 readingAs part of our commitment to reading and literacy at SRWA, students in years 7-9 are benefiting from a new programme called 'Just Reading'.

For one English lesson per week the teacher reads aloud from a novel while the students listen and follow along in a shared experience of the story. Recent research from the University of Sussex has shown that listening to faced-paced reading with a fluent reader can improve engagement with the text and improve literacy in the listener.

Our English team have chosen a selection of texts ranging from classics such as To Kill A Mockingbird to more diverse novels such as Black Flamingo, aiming to complete six novels in a year.

Feedback from the students has been very positive and everyone looks forward to the sessions. Pictured here is a year 8 session with the teacher reading The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime.
