Uk Maths Trust Challenge

We have recently had some real successes in Maths in the UKMT (UK Maths Trust) Intermediate Challenge which a number of our students across years 9, 10 and 11 sat back in February.

This is a national maths paper that covers questions that don’t necessarily require skills beyond the ones they have learned in the classroom but which do require them to apply those skills in unfamiliar ways and to solve unusual problems.

The top 40% of students across the country receive an award, with 1/6 of those being a gold award, 1/3 a silver and 1/2 a bronze.  Overall we had 15 bronze awards, 9 silver awards and 5 gold awards plus 6 of our students have now gone through to the second round Kangaroo papers, which they will take later this month.

One result particularly stood out. Saffron Bloxham, who received a gold award and will sit the Kangaroo paper in a  few weeks’ time, was in the top 1.5% of results nationally and has been invited to a UKMT 5-day residential summer school this summer. This is an opportunity that is only made available to 200 students a year and it is the first time one of our students has ever been invited. Saffron is a hugely talented and motivated mathematician and will undoubtedly make the most of this fantastic opportunity where she will be doing Maths all day long alongside students from across the country.

Well Saffron and to all students who took part!
