Year 8 Making Choices Medical Day

There are 40 students in year 8 that take part in the Making Choices programme which is aimed at exposing students to the idea of university from a young age. The groups are split into either Arts or STEM depending on their personal interests.

This month the STEM students visited University of Sussex to take part in medical day. They spent the day with four medical students who were training to become doctors. Our students spent the day learning and understanding the importance of a doctors questioning when patients visit their GP. They were given a fictitious case and had to diagnose the illness. To do this they were taught how to take blood pressure, use a record the peak flow, how to find a pulse on different areas of the body and to check reflexes. The students collated the information enabling them to diagnose the cause of the illness.
