Amazing Book Awards presentation evening

Friday was the Amazing Book Awards presentation evening at Shoreham academy and the culmination of a term of exciting reading; A group of ABA readers from SRWA went along to meet the authors and witness the announcement of the winning book.

The shortlist was:

I have No Secrets by Penny Joelson,

RE-Made by Alex Scarrow

Ink by Alice Broadway

Sleeper by J D Fennell

Noah Can’t Even by Simon James Green

The event began at 6.30pm where Holly Bourne, last year’s winner, welcomed everyone and announced the students who would introduce the shortlisted authors to the stage.

Simon James Green had us all in tears of laughter as he read from the opening pages of the sequel to ‘Noah Can’t Even’; Penny Joelson talked about why she chose her main character to be someone with severe cerebral palsy who couldn’t communicate at all and J D Fennell talked about growing up in 1970s Belfast and how that influenced his writing.

Holly then announced the Bronze award winner Simon James Green, the silver award went to Alice Broadway and the winning book was Penny Joelson’s thriller, I have no Secrets.

The audience cheered and applauded in delight – although our SRWA readers had voted for J D Fennell’s tale of double agents in WWII. Annabel was also announced as the winner of the prize for the best alternative bookcover for XXXX . Then the authors went to the signing table where students could meet them, get photos taken and have their books signed.

All the students who attended the evening with their families had enjoyed the whole process, and many of the parents commented on how much they appreciated the opportunity to extend their child’s reading range.
