National Theatre Connections- The Free 9

Performing arts students at SRWA are this month taking part in the prestigious National Theatre Connections festival.

Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools. It gives young people experience of professional theatre-making. They create marketing campaigns, design sets and costumes, operate lighting and sound boards, stage-manage their performances on stages in theatres across the country.

Our students will be performing The Free 9, a new play by Korean playwright In-Sook Chappell which follows the adventures of nine teenagers who flee North Korea, dreaming of a new life in the South. With threats around every corner, perhaps the mysterious figure of The Big Brother can help them? Or is he the very person they’re running from? As their lives hang in the balance, could the teenagers’ fate ultimately come down to a garish South Korean game show? Based on a true story, this is the story of hope, escape and cultural difference.

The performances will take place at SRWA on 22nd and 23rd February and on 23rd March at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester.

This promises to be a fascinating play, please come along and support. Tickets available via link below.
