Southern Schools Book Award

A group of ten students attended the prestigious Southern Schools Book Award event at Roedean School last week.

It was the culmination of four months of reading and discussing the five shortlisted books, all of which are aimed at the YA (young adult) age range. The group all read the 5 books and we met each Tuesday to discuss the themes and issues arising (organ donation and transplantation; racial tension and the Klu Klux Klan in 1960s Americans deep south; radicalisation and ISIS in present day Britain and Syria; physical abuse by a step-parent and the psychological results along with the death penalty in Texas; relationships between grandchild and grandparent including references to wartime experiences and coping with bereavement).

The presentation evening took place in the Roedean Theatre last Friday with 30+ local schools attending and four of the five short-listed authors – the one who couldn’t attend sent a film instead. Chris Riddell, the last Children’s Laureate was also there, drawing on stage and signing copies of his drawings for the students afterwards.

The books were:

Paper Butterflies by Lisa Heathfield;

Margot and Me by Juno Dawson;

The Trap by Alan Gibbons,

The Hypnotist by Laurence Anholt and

Instructions for a Second Hand Heart by Tamsyn Murray.

Our students had a fantastic time and received a book token and the opportunity to meet each author and get their books signed.
