Food & Nutrition/Hospitality & Catering at SRWA

There are two courses running at this time. In KS3 the students study Food Preparation and Nutrition, with Year 9 having an introduction to Hospitality and Catering, and in KS4 the students study Hospitality and Catering.

Both these subjects are life skills, which prepare the students for future independent living and perhaps a career in the Hospitality and Catering industry. Pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, English, science, design, modern foreign languages, history, ICT, sport, geography and business studies. By making and evaluating their dishes, students become more confident in their ability and their knowledge of how dishes can be made nutritiously. Both courses are designed to challenge the more academic students as well as encourage and develop confidence and independence in the less academic students.

Developing Our Learners

In Food Preparation and Nutrition the aim is to develop a good understanding of food safety, nutrition, healthy eating, preparation skills and cooking skills in order to plan and safely prepare good healthy meals. In Hospitality and Catering students build on the principles learnt in KS3 to further develop their skills in planning and preparing healthy meals. Students will learn the workings of the Hospitality and Catering industry in order for them to understand the role which this subject plays in leading to a career in the industry.

Structure And Sequence

In KS3 students have lots of opportunity to put their skills into practice by preparing and cooking a variety of suitable dishes as well as learning the basics of nutrition, knowledge of where the ingredients used in the dishes come from and the safe handling of food before, during and after cooking the dish.

In KS4 students have further opportunities to develop and hone their preparation and cooking skills by cooking more challenging dishes. Alongside this they will also learn the workings of the hospitality and catering industry. Students will have opportunities to visit hospitality and catering venues as well as talk to people working in the industry.

Destinations And The World Of Work

KS3 Food Preparation and Nutrition will encourage students to choose Hospitality and Catering in KS4. This can lead to a career in an industry which is one of the biggest employers in the world. Opportunities exist in restaurants, cafes, hotels, fast food, events catering, private functions and more. As a vocational subject it leads directly to apprenticeships and employment as well as to further education.
