IRIS Project - Genome Decoders Induction event

Posted on: 3rd Feb 2020

A group of our Year 9, 10 and 11 students led by Mr Gardiner, hosted the first Genome Decoders induction event for groups of students and teachers from The Littlehampton Academy and St Philip Howard School.

Our students worked as mentors helping to train the visiting Year 12 students and teachers on the use of the gene annotation programme APOLLO, which they are currently using to help scientists at the Wellcome Sanger Institute decode the genome of the human whipworm, a serious disease causing parasite called Trichuris trichiura.

This is one of several projects being delivered by SRWA as the South Coast Hub for the Institute for Research In Schools, providing opportunities for students to participate in cutting edge science as young research scientists.
