At the Sir Robert Woodard Academy we are committed to developing an internationalist perspective that pervades all of our work and meets the needs of three interconnected communities: the young people and adults of the school; the people of Lancing and Sompting; and the people of the world. The developing vision for this aspect of our work, is leading students to be asking themselves: What can I do? How can I make a difference? How can I make sure that the mark I leave behind is a positive one?
On Friday 21st October 2016, an intrepid group of twelve SRWA students will be flying from Gatwick to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia at the start of an amazing new adventure. They will be working with disabled children who are being integrated into mainstream schools in a country where disability is viewed very differently from here. It is a huge challenge and one to which our students are already rising. Led by the ever enthusiastic and very caring Ms Peach (who also led the team to Uganda in 2014) and Ms English, the team have organised countless fund-raisers.
We have International trips planned for the next 12 months and they include: a ski trip to Austria, a day trip to Boulogne, and in June there is an Art and History trip to Russia to develop friendship with the students of School 27 in Kursk. During Activities Week in July there is the Performing Arts Tour to Lake Garda in Italy and a six day break to France and Spain. Four of our A level French students are spending three weeks living and working in France during the summer. As well as the Ethiopia expedition there is also an expedition to Borneo in August 2016. At the planning stage, we have a cricket tour to South Africa and a 2017 ski trip.
