PSHE, Citizenship, Skills For Life
PSHE and Citizenship education equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives.
It provides opportunities for young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.
At SRWA, PSHE and Citizenship are delivered through a combination of our Skills for Life curriculum and topic-specific 'off-timetable' days, as well as through cross-curricular opportunities in other subjects. This is complemented by a programme of assemblies and tutor time activities.
Skills for Life is designed to equip students with the confidence, knowledge and skills to lead fulfilling and ambitious lives. It is a combination of traditional PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) and Citizenship (how to participate in society).
Aims Of The Subject
Citizenship:
- acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of how the United Kingdom is governed, its political system and how citizens participate actively in its democratic systems of government
- develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the role of law and the justice system in our society and how laws are shaped and enforced
- develop an interest in, and commitment to, participation in volunteering as well as other forms of responsible activity, that they will take with them into adulthood
- are equipped with the skills to think critically and debate political questions, to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis, and plan for future financial needs.
PSHE:
- develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking
- through the context of three core themes: physical and mental health, relationships and sex, and economic wellbeing.

Notes on Statutory Requirements
The Department for Education is introducing compulsory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) for secondary pupils from September 2020. Also, from September 2020 it will be compulsory for all schools to teach Health Education.
Citizenship is a compulsory national curriculum subject at key stage 3 and a compulsory national curriculum 'foundation' subject at key stage 4. All local-authority-maintained schools in England must teach the national curriculum programmes of study.
